Should you include a photo on your resume or CV in 2023?

In some countries and industries, it is customary to include a photo in a CV or resume. However, in other countries and industries, it is not necessary and may even be discouraged. In the United States, for example, including a photo in a CV is not common practice and may even be seen as unprofessional. In general, it is recommended that you research the conventions for the industry and country you are applying to and follow them.

One potential downside of including a photo in your CV is that it may lead to unconscious bias from the recruiter or hiring manager. This means that they may make judgments based on your appearance that have nothing to do with your qualifications or skills for the job. For example, it could potentially lead to unconscious bias or discrimination based on factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, or appearance. In other cases, including a photo can be helpful, especially if you are applying for a position where appearance is relevant, such as in the fashion or entertainment industry.

On the other hand, let’s be honest. In the social media era, it is no secret that recruiters often look for your social profiles. That means that even if you avoid having your photo on your CV it is possible that they’ll have an idea of your image, so, watch your image on your public profiles too. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to include a photo in your CV depends on the norms of the industry and country where you are applying, as well as your personal preference. If you do choose to include a photo, make sure it is a professional-looking headshot and not a casual snapshot. In general, it's best to focus on the content and layout of your CV and make sure it's tailored to the specific job and company you're applying to, rather than emphasizing your appearance.
